The main difference between a hi-fi or stereo system and a home theatre is the number of audio tracks that are output from the system. With a stereo system, there are two, one for the left and one for the right. In the case of a home theatre, at least 5 audio tracks are reproduced. A HiFi or stereo system consists of a receiver, an amplifier (usually both devices combined as an AV receiver) and 2 identical boxes for the reproduction of the stereo signal.
