The main difference between a HiFi or stereo system and a home theatre is the number of audio tracks that are output from the system. With a stereo system, there are two, one for the left and one for the right. In the case of a home theatre, at least 5 audio tracks are reproduced. A HiFi or stereo system consists of a receiver, an amplifier (usually both devices combined as an AV receiver) and 2 identical boxes for the reproduction of the stereo signal. The classic 5.1 home theatre includes, in addition to the receiver, other speakers such as the centre and several surround boxes, as well as the subwoofer.
